Serious Sam's Bogus Detour - Bomberman mod

Bomberman mod - "Bombersam"

This is a Bomberman game design project for Serious Sam's Bogus Detour. A mod was released containing the different levels. The goal was to create levels for a varying number of players (2-8) with a mix of both new and old mechanics from the old retro-game, Bomberman.
My part in this mod was to design the functionality of the game objects and the different obstacles throughout the different levels. Some of the art were taken directly from the main game (cosmetic props and tilesets), but alot of the assets were drawn and created by me specifically for this mod.

Beyond those tasks, my role was to design and script the levels in order to implement the functionality coded by Niklas Myrberg.

"Level 1" First, very basic level. Roughly inspired by the layout of a classic Bomberman level.

The brick blocks can be destroyed by a single bomb blast and has a chance to spawn one powerup item.

These are all the item icons made for the game. Functionality wise (from left);
Increased speed - Increased bomb - Invinsibility (debunked) - Kick bomb (debunked) - P-bomb - Piercing bombs (debunked) - Increased blast range - DECREASED blast range - Geta

"Oilslick" - A more open level designed for a quicker play. Fewer destructibles (oil drums) means fewer items. Introducing new mechanic; "bomb vent" that frames the center to create some valuable end-game destructibles.

The frame is a hollow block that a player cant destroy, nor walk through. The bomb blasts can however travel through them as if they weren't there.

The vent is a danger area that is triggered by a bomb blast. All vents in the entire level is connected. This forces the player to be more concerned of the bombs hidden out of sight.

"Crispy" - Another version of "Oilslick" that's designed to produce a longer game. Some single "bomb vents" are placed in each area for the players to try their luck in blasting other players off screen.

"Castlemania" - A large, longplay level designed for a game with more players than avarage. The hazards in this level is designed to elongate the blasts of the players and create a faster (and more dangerous) way to collect powerups.

When the Gargoyle is hit by a bomb blast, it triggers a timer. When the timer has reached zero, the gargoyle creates another bomb blast. In turn they can trigger other bombs and be used both offensively and defensively.

"Ice crawler" - An ice themed alternative version of the standard "Level 1", with a twist; some of the unbreakable blocks are actually breakable after a few hits.

"Space conquest" - A space station supermix with mini versions of the different themes. Each area has teleports that takes the player to the next theme. Designed to show mastery of the different game mechanics.

Teleport out - Teleport in. The areas that are smaller (Castlemania and Oilslick) have the possibility to travel back to the previous area to avoid exploiting the unawareness of incoming teleporting players.

The slime is a destructible block that respawns. If the player stands at the area where it respawns, they die. The ghost is an enemy that hunts the players if disturbed and falls down on them if they stand still too long. The door opens with a bomb blast.

Don't disturb the ghost. They'll follow you until you hit them with a bomb blast!
